Going to school! I never "went to work," I was always "going to school." I graduated from AUBURN in 1973, Troy State/Dothan in '76 and Samford University in '82. I taught in Dothan, Homewood (at Edgewood!), Opelika and Auburn City Schools, retiring after 27 years of "going to school" experiencing challenges, inspiration and great joy. Retirement provided different opportunities: Disciple Bible studies, classes in quilting and painting, work on Habitat houses and with the Food Pantry. Other commitments include active support of education (K-12 and AUBURN U.), women's athletics and community involvement. David's career in athletics has blessed us with great friends, extensive travel and constant excitement. Living in a college community certainly keeps people active and young-at-heart!
reading, planning/organizing group events, attending AUBURN sports events
Thinking about reunion brings many memories: George Joe in Mountie Man overalls, Morning Watch and "Love Lifted Me," working quickly with Kathy Frances to set all the stops on George Gartseff's typewriter before he came in to the class after ours, wondering where "Snead Junior College" could be when we had College Day, ordering pizza to be delivered through the windows in Ms.Gibbs classroom, "Pencils up! All pencils aren't up!," Miss Hightower's "Band of Angels," "The Music Man," notes traded with Peter Tropper in Miss Mackey's class when we questioned how everything in literature could be symbolic of... , lockers, gymsuits, ham salad sandwiches, campaigns, pep rallies, assemblies, friends, being "Mountie born, born and Mountie bred, bred." For Christmas one year recently my husband gave me two bricks rescued from the demolition of our high school building. I cried. Where ever we are in life, may we always honor the friends and memories from Shades Valley High School. |

Living life as best I could. I was fortunate enough to travel quite frequently and saw a lot of the world and the U.S.
I love museums and cultural events, live sports events(Roll Tide)and traveling.
While I am a member of the class of 1969, you will not find Veronica Lynne Howell in the yearbooks or anywhere since I looked quite different and had a different name back then. The guy you knew as Ronnie Traywick is now Veronica Lynne Howell. This has not been an easy choice for me, it is a conflict within me that has gone on for over 50 years. Even back at Shades Valley it was going on. I tried to suppress the fact there was a woman inside me for those 50 years and anger and rage built up in me. I am now out and I have never been happier. I know I'll lose friends over this but it had to be done for my own good or it would have eventually killed me. I'll never be invited to the Shades Valley girls meetings but that's ok. I'll living the life now I have needed to live. I am a much better and kinder and happier person now.

Teaching children with special needs and helping them to see their potential in life. Retired to care for my mom who is now 93 and my grandchildren. Have three great kids; one in military intelligence, one a fireman captain, and my precious mechanical engineer daughter.
Love hiking, camping, walking, dancing, taking pictures, traveling, and working on genealogy. Love doing random acts of kindness and watching the eyes of my grandkids when they learn something new or have fun doing something.
Loved seeing those at the reunion. Missed those that could not attend. I hope life is treating you well. I hope you are happy and doing as much good as you can in life for others. Three important things I have learned . Show those you love that you care and care for those that you love. Forgive and forget. And sugar is your enemy because it feeds cancer, while unfiltered apple cider vinegar is your friend and keeps you healthy. God bless each of us and keep us strong and healthy. Live your life, don't let it live you. Love to all.
