After graduating from SVHS, I attended Auburn University, received a degree in Interior Design in 1974, and then began a career with South Central Bell, which morphed into BellSouth and now into AT&T. Over my 37 year career with AT&T, I have held a wide variety of positions, some more interesting than others. I married Rod Abbott in 1975 (SVHS '66) and (some say miraculously) stayed happily married for 35 years, until his sudden death in March of this year. We have one son, Tom, a wonderful daughter-in-law, Jenine, and 3 grandchildren - Andrew, who is 16, Alexander, who is 11 and Ashlee, who is 10 (going on 21). In 1996 I decided to go back to school and get my Master's degree, and in 1999 I graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a Master's Degree in Public & Private Management. I am currently serving my 3rd term on the Birmingham City Council representing District 3, a job that takes much more time and energy than my "paying job" with AT&T. I live on Birmingham's Southside in Glen Iris Park with my Chinese Shar-Pei named Theo, regularly attend Southside Baptist Church and am happy just to be alive.
I love to garden, renovate houses (mostly my own), swim & kayak, although there's not much time for any of them! I have a 1930 Ford Touring Sedan that I intend to restore - someday.

After SVHS, I went to Auburn, drank my way through college graduating in 1973. I left Birmingham in 1978. 30+ years in the insurance industry took me to Indianapolis, Denver, Indianapolis, Connecticut and Richmond, VA (at least for now).
Stephanie and I opened a green home products store and contracting business in 2008. Not the best timing in the world, but nothing like a challenge :-)
Right now keeping two businesses going takes most of my time. The rest is devoted to our 8 year old son, Sam.

Working since graduation and just enjoying life. I thank God every day for my blessings. My sister and I are the only ones left in my family and neither one of us have any children, well, not 'human' kids, but canine (2 each). Oh, and the 'husbands' - sorry, forgot they are children (lol).
Playing Yahtzee, reading, jigsaw puzzles, working in the yard and staying in touch with old friends.
Hope we have a large turnout for the reunion in August 2011. Life gets shorter every year. Please come if you can - I am looking forward to seeing everyone. |

Several of them. Maybe only once or twice a year, but I still know where some of them are.
I've been a surgical nurse for the last 40 years....all of them! I now do the robotics surgery at Trinity Medical Center (formerly Baptist Montclair) This has allowed me to do some travelling: All 50 states and 11 other countries. Hopefully, many more in the future. So far, my favorite trip was a photo safari in Kenya.
I've also enjoyed having animals. I'm on my third German Shepherd. I've had several cats and a horse as well. I still enjoy getting in the out of doors. I can't do much hiking anymore, but I still enjoy a stroll through the woods. My last trip was to the southwest, so I got to stroll through several of the National Parks in Utah, Colorado and Arizona. I also enjoy getting with friends weekly for pot luck dinners and movies. Singing in the church choir is also a real joy for me. Are you happy now, Mark? |

I was a transfer student to SVHS in our Junior year. After graduation, I finished Samford University, where I met my wife, Suzan. We have been married for 44 years. I then completed graduate school in counseling at The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and then lived in Fort Worth and Atlanta before moving back to Birmingham in 1985. I went back to school and got an M.B.A. at Alabama and left counseling and joined Merrill Lynch, where I have been for the past 30 years. My wife taught kindergarten at Highlands School for over 30 years. Our son, Tyler, is 37 years old. He finished at Birmigham Southern College and lives in Los Angeles and works for UNICEF.
I am a runner. I also love to travel. My favorite thing is to combine the two. I have run marathons in New York, Chicago, Edinburgh in Scotland, and the Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham.

Certified R.N., Psychiatry & Alcohol& Drug Abuse treatment.
Co-Founder of Birmngham Chapter of Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association of Alabama. 1990. National Association for the Mentally Challenged advocate.
I travel to see my family in Europe.
I went to J'ville for 1 year and left. I married, worked and traveled. I attended Jefferson State Jr. College 1975-1977, then Samford University working on a BSN.
I love traveling in Europe, especially 11th century churches. To stand in one is truly breath-taking to me (Spier), to participate in the service is more than incredible considering the age of the church.
I retired and truly felt my vocation was one of christian service.
I haven't made but one reunion (10 year) because I was always working but I wouldn't miss this one!Well I did miss this one but honestly, I was sick with flu or stomach virus then broke 3 toes (ouch). Really sorry I missed. |
